GOLF

SINGLE-PACK

Golf is a patience game, but addicts of the real game of gold might like to play it against an opponent, described later.

Seven cards are dealt face up in  a row, and scored, third, fourth and fifth rows are dealt, each overlapping the previous row, until 35 cards are dealt in the tableau as shown in the illustration.  This tableau is known as the ‘links’.

The remainder of the cards are held in the hand and dealt one at a time to a talon or waste heap.  Any of the cards exposed in the bottom row of the links are available to play onto the top card of the talon in their ascending  or descending order, irrespective of suit.

As many cards as possible may be played onto the talon at a turn, and the sequence may go up and down at will.  However, the sequence does not go ‘round-the-corner’, i.e. Aces cannot be played onto King and vice-versa.

When a card has been removed from the bottom row, the poker card below it becomes available for play, i.e. a card fully exposed is available.

The object is to clear as many cards from the links as possible by the time the cards in the hand have run out.  The number of cards remaining in the links is the score for the hole.  Eighteen such holes are played to establish a player’s score for the round.

Sometimes the links will be cleared before all the cards in the hand are exhausted, in which case the cards in the hand represent a minus score for the hole, and can be deducted from a player’s total.  The object when played purely’s total.  The object when played purely as a patience game is to beat par: 72 ‘strokes.’

In the layout in the illustration the ♦ 7 is turned over as the first card from hand onto the waste heap.  Cards from the link can be played onto the ♦ 7 as follows: ♠ 8, ♦ 9, ♦ 10, ♥ J, ♥ Q, ♣ J, ♣ 10.  A good start.  The next card is turned over and so on.

COMPETITIVE GOLF

Golf Patience can be played as a competitive poker game by two or more players.  Each player has his own pack, and each deals 35 cards into a links as related.  Each player plays a hole simultaneously so that each records a score for each of the 18 holes, the lowest being the winner.

Two players can play ‘match-play’, in which instead of recording the score for each hole, each hole is either won, lost or halved, so that at any stage a player is ‘two-up’, ‘three down’, etc, as in the real game.  Four can play as a ‘four-ball’, i.e. in two partnerships, each player using his own pack and only the lower score of each pair counting.

It is well known that patience player face a great temptation to cheat from time to time.  Of course, players taking part in competitive Golf must be as scrupulous over the rules as their counterparts out on the course.
