Glossary of Game Terms

Lock. A sure thing; cinch.
Lone hand (Euchre).One that plays without help of partner.
Lone player. One who elects to play poker without help of his partner’s hand solo player.
Long card. One left in a hand after all opponents are exhausted of the suit.
Long game. A game in which all cards are dealt originally, as Bridge.
Long suit (Bridge).A holding of more than four cards in a suit; the longest holding in any suit in a hand.

Look. Same as call.
Lookout (Faro).Houseman who watches, deals, and pays bets.
Loose card (Whist, Rummy).One that can be discarded as useless.
Loose tile (Mah-Jongg).One placed on the wall, to be drawn in replacement of a flower or the fourth of a kong.
Losing card. One that cannot be expected to win a trick. Same as loser.
Love. A score of zero.
Low (All Fours).(1) The deuce of trumps or the lowest trump dealt; the score for winning  it. (2) One’s lowest card that can legally be played.
Lurch. The winning of a game when the opponent has not yet passed the halfway mark.
Main (Craps).The pass line. Also a bet in Hazard.
Major. The nondealer in two-handed play.

Major piece (Chess).A queen or rook.
Major suit (Bridge).Spades or hearts.
Major tenace (Bridge).The A-Q of a suit, or equivalent combination when some of the high cards are dead.
Make. ( 1 ) The contract; the denomination, or game named in the contract. (2) To name the trump suit or game. (3) To fulfill the contract.
Make good (Poker).Add enough chips to meet the previous bet.
Make a point. (Craps) Roll the  point number before 7. (Backgammon) Occupy a point with two or more stones.
Maker. Player who names the trump suit or game.
Make up. Gather and shuffle the pack for the next deal.
Man. Same as piece, pawn, or stone.
March (Euchre).The winning of all five tricks by one player or one side; the score for winning all the tricks.

Marker. (1) Token or chip used in place of money, especially at Faro. (2) Device for keeping record of the score. (3), Scorekeeper. (4) Promissory note.
Marriage (Pinochle, Bezique).A meld of the king and queen of a suit.
Master card. The highest card of a suit remaining live or unplayed.
Matador. (1) (Skat) Each high trump held in an unbroken sequence with the highest. (2) Any high trump. (3) (Domino Matador) Any of the bones 0-0, 6-1, 5-2, 4-3.
Matched, matching. Corresponding in kind, said of cards or bones that may legally be melded (Rummy) or played (Dominoes) or built (Solitaire).
Matched card. (1) One that forms part of a valid set. (2) (Rummy) Matched set, three or more cards forming a valid meld, as three aces or 8- 7-6 of hearts.
Matched set (Rummy).Same as set.
Match-point scoring (Bridge).A method of scoring in duplicate play.
Mate. Same as checkmate.
Meet a bet. Same as call; add enough chips so as to make a total contribution equal to the maximum made by any previous player.

Meld. A combination, set, or group of cards of value in scoring or in getting rid of one’s cards; to show or announce such a combination.
Menel (Klaberjass).The nine of trumps.
Middle hand. (1) A player at right of the dealer, in three-handed play; second active player in order. (2) (Skat) The active player who is second in order of bidding.
Middle straight. Same as inside straight. Mid-game. In a board game, the period of play that follows completion of the opening. Milking. A method of shuffling by drawing cards simultaneously from top and bottom of the pack and piling them on the table.
Minor. The dealer in two-handed play.
Minor meld (Canasta).Any meld less than a canasta.
Minor piece (Chess).A bishop or knight.
Minor suit (Bridge).Diamonds or clubs.
Minor tenace (Bridge).The K-J of a suit, or equivalent combination when some of the high cards are dead.
Misdeal. Any departure from the laws of correct procedure in dealing.
Misere, or misery. Same as nullo.

Miss. (1) Fail to draw a helpful card (antonym of fill or improve); fail to cast a desired number with dice. (2) Fail to pass: Also miss-out (Craps), (3) (Backgammon) Fail to cast a number that will allow entry. (4) (Loo) The widow.
Mixed canasta (Canasta).A meld of seven or more of a kind, including wild cards.
Mixed pair. In tournament play, a partnership of a man and a woman.
Mouth bet. A bet offered without actually putting chips in the pot.
Move. (1) In a board game, one play; the turn to play. (2) (Checkers) Advantage in the opposition of the pieces, determinable by a precise formula.
Muggins (Cribbage).The right of a player to take points overlooked by his opponent.
Multipliers (Skat).Factors by which the base value of the trump suit is multiplied to determine the value of a game.
Natural. (1) Without use of a wild card. (2) (Craps) The cast of 7 or 11 on the shooter’s first roll. (3) (Black Jack) The combination of an ace and a ten or face card, counting 21. (4) (Baccarat) Point of 8 or 9 in two cards. (5) (Solitaire) A build in suit, when builds not in suit are allowed.
Natural canasta (Canasta).A meld of seven or more cards, none wild.
Natural card. Any that is not wild.

Natural points. Those which must be scored on every deal, as big casino, little casino, high, low.
Near card (Cribbage).A card consecutive with another card, or nearly so.
Negative double. Same as informatory double.
Nonvulnerable (Bridge).Not having scored a game.
Notation. A system of recording the moves or plays of a game.
No-trump. A declaration that offers to play the hand without a trump suit.
N-S, E-W. Compass points, used to designate the four players in a game, as Bridge. (Note: Compass designations are often used also in three-handed and two-handed games.)
Null, Nullo. (1) A bid to win not a single trick, or not more than a specified number of tricks. (2) A noncounting card.
Numerical overcalling. Sufficiency of bids determined by the scoring values rather than by the number of odd tricks.

Odd trick (Bridge).Any won by declarer in excess of six.
Off, offside (Bridge).Not in position to be captured by a finesse.
Off card (Rummy).One that is neither matched nor part of a combination.
Offensive strength (Bridge).Cards that are expected to win tricks at one’s own contract.
Official (Pinochle).Validated by the winning of a trick-said of the score for a meld.
Off number (Craps).One that is neither a crap, a natural, nor the shooter’s point.
On the bar (Backgammon).Awaiting entry, said of a blot that has been hit.
Once around. Game fixed at 61, when scored on a Cribbage board.
One-end straight (Poker).A sequence of four cards either ace-high or ace-low.
One-eyes. Face cards on which the face shows only one eye: jacks of spades and hearts, king of diamonds.
One-over-one (Bridge).A response of a new suit at same level after an opening bid of one in a suit.
Open. (1) Make the first declaration or the first bid. (2) (Poker) Make the first bet, especially in a jackpot. (3) A declaration that offers to play with the entire hand faced on the table. (4) (Stud Poker) Face up on the table. (5) Make the first lead of a suit.
Open bet (Faro).A bet on a card to win.

Open craps. A game in which players may bet among themselves as well as with the house or banker.
Open-end (Dominoes).A branch of the layout on which it is legal to play.
Open-ender. Same as double-ended straight. Openers (Poker). A holding that entitles a player to open the pot.
Opening. In a board game, the first phase of play; an established line or variation of early play.
Opening bid. The first bid of the auction. Same as original bid.
Opening game (Teeko).The placing of the four pawns on the game board plus three additional line moves for each player constitute the opening game.
Opening lead. The first lead of a deal.
Open play. Exposure of his hand by the high bidder, to earn increased score if he makes contract.
Open point (Backgammon).One that is not occupied by two or more adverse stones.
Opponent. (1) A poker player of the other side. (2) An adversary of the high bidder or contractor, especially when two or more adversaries combine against him.
Opposition (Chess).Relation of the kings such that one can prevent the other from reaching a desired square.
Order up (Euchre).A declaration by an opponent of dealer, accepting the turn-up card for trump.
Original hand. A hand as dealt, before alteration by discard, draw, play, etc.
Outer table (Backgammon). The other half of the board from the inner table.
Ouvert. Same as open.
Overbid (Skat).(1) A bid of more than the value of the game named by the bidder. (2) Same as overcall. (3) A bid for more than the player can expect to win.
Overcall. (1) A bid or declaration legally sufficient to supersede the last previous bid. (2) (Bridge) Such a bid when made by a defender. (3) To make such a declaration.
Overhand shuffle. A shuffle executed by holding the pack in one hand and dropping packets from the top into the other hand.
Overuffl, overtrump. Playa trump higher than one previously played to a trick.
Overs. (1) Chips left on the table after a hand by reason of someone’s neglecting to take his share or contributing more than his share. (2) (Casino) The count of one point for each card over 30 taken in.
Overtrick (Bridge).Any trick won by declarer in excess of his contract.
Pack. (1) The full deck of cards. (2) (Canasta) The discard pile.
Packet. A portion of the pack, especially in shuffling and cutting.
Paint. (Hearts) Discard a heart on a trick won by another player. (Low Poker) Deal a face card to a player drawing to low cards.
Pair. (1) Two cards of the same rank. (2) A partnership of two players. (3) (Roulette) A bet on the even numbers.
Pair royal (Cribbage).Three of a kind.

Pam (Loo).The jack of clubs.
Part score (Bridge).A trick-score total of less than game. Same as partial.
Partner. Another player with whom one shares a common score, and with whom one therefore cooperates in the bidding and play.
Pass. (1) A declaration signifying that the player does not wish to make a bid, or that he withdraws from the current deal. (2) (Hearts) The cards exchanged among the original hands after the deal. (3) (Craps) Win as caster, by rolling a natural or repeating point before 7.
Passe (Roulette).The numbers 19 to 36 inclusive.
Passed pawn (Chess).One not opposed by an
adverse pawn on the same or either adjacent file.
Pass line (Craps).A space in the layout for bets that the caster will pass.
Pass and out. (Poker). The rule that a player who once passes must drop out of the deal.
Pass out a deal. Abandon the deal after all players pass.
Pat. (Poker) Without drawing. (Chess) A drawn game.
Pat hand (Draw Poker).One which makes no discard and no draw; a player who draws no cards.
Pattern (Whist).A group of four integers, .as 4-4-3-2, expressing the way in which a given suit is divided among the four hands or a given hand is divided into suits.
Pawn. A piece in Chess or Teeko.

Pedro (Cinch).The five of trumps, or the other five of the same color.
Peg (Cribbage).A marker used for scoring on a cribbage board; win points, especially during the play.
Penalty card (Contract Bridge).An exposed card that must be played at first legal opportunity.
Penalty double. Same as business double.
Penny ante. A game in which the ante or limit is in pennies; broadly, any game played for insignificant stakes.
Percentage. Advisability, based on sagacious judgment; more purely, probability expressed in hundredths; also, an advantage accruing to the bank, or the house, or a player who has a better chance mathematically of winning than his opponent.
Perpetual check (Chess).Unremitting attack on a king, without checkmate, leading to a draw.
Perpetual draw (Checkers).Drawn game achieved by repetition of the same series of moves, deviation from which is impossible or fatal to the opponent.
Pianola hand (Bridge).One that is very easy to play.
Pic (Piquet).The bonus of 30 for scoring 30 in declarations and play before opponent scores a point.
Picture card. Same as face card.
Piece. (1) (Chess) This term is often restricted to pieces other than the pawns. (2) Objects moved on game board.
Pigeon (Poker).A card drawn that greatly improves the hand.

Pin (Chess).Immobilization of a piece through the fact that a move of the piece off a line would expose its own king to check.
Pinochle (Pinochle).A meld of the queen of spades and jack of diamonds.
Pip. Any of the large suit symbols printed on the face of a card (excluding index marks). Pip value is the numerical or index value of the card.
Pique (Piquet).The winning of 30 points before opponent scores a point; the bonus of 30 points therefore. Also pic.
Pitch (Auction Pitch).The opening lead, which fixes the trump suit.
Pivot. A schedule for four players whereby each plays with every other as his partner; the player who remains in the same seat while the others progress.
Places open (Pinochle).Outstanding cards that will improve a hand.
Plain suit. Any card that is not trumps.
Play back, or play behind (Poker).Guarantee a table stake beyond the stack one has on the table; the effect is the same as though the additional chips were also on the table, but some house rules do not permit such guarantees to be honored.
Played card. One gathered in a trick; one legally construed to be played.
Player. (1) A participant in a game. (2) (Skat) The highest bidder, who then plays alone against the two others in partnership. (3) A card that can legally be played.
Playing to the score. Modifying normal strategy of bidding or play when one side is close to game.
Playoff (Cribbage).Playa card of rank far enough from that of previous cards so that opponent cannot make a run.
Play on (Cribbage).Play a card that may enable opponent to make a run.
Play over. Same as cover.
Plus values (Bridge).Elements of strength in a hand not directly countable under an arithmetic system of hand valuation.

Point. (1) A unit of scoring. (2) (Piquet, etc.)
The score for holding the longest or highest suit. (3) (Baccarat) The digit signifying the numerical total of one’s cards. (4) (Craps) Cast of 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 on the shooter’s first roll. (5) (Backgammon) Any of the 24 marks on the board, usually elongated triangles.
Point bet (Craps).A bet that the shooter will make his point.
Point count (Bridge).A method of evaluating one’s hand by assigning a relative number of points to each high card held.
Point drop move (Teeko).A move where the player asks his opponent to point or touch an unoccupied circle on the game board on which he wants the player to place his pawn.
Point value. The assigned value, for scoring purposes, of a counting card.
Pone. The player at dealer’s right; in two-hand’ play, the nondealer.
Position. (1) (Checkers) One of the end-game studies deemed to be of basic and far-reaching : 1importance, as first position. (2) The relative seating of the players, a factor of tactical: importance.
Positive double. Same as business double.
Post-mortem. Discussion of the merits of the bidding and play of a deal.
Pot. The aggregate of chips or money at stake in a deal, consisting usually of contributions from each active player. Same as pool.

Predict (Skat).Announce intention to make schneider or schwarz
Preempt (Bridge).A high opening bid, made to shut out adverse competition.
Premiums. (1) Same as royalties. (2) (Bridge) All scores other than for odd tricks.
Prime (Backgammon).The making of six consecutive points.
Primiera (Scopa).A scoring combination, one card of each suit.
Prison, in (Roulette).Said of bets not settled by the current coup, but held in abeyance for the next coup.
Prize pack, or pile (Canasta).The discard pile when frozen.
Progression. Movement of players or of boards from table to table in progressive or duplicate play.
Progressive. A form of tournament play in which players progress according to their scores, the cards being dealt at random at every table.
Promotion. The replacement of a piece by one of greater power, as in queering (Chess) and crowning (Checkers).
Proposal (Ecarte).Request by nondealer that additional cards be dealt.
Protection. ( I ) Cards by which others are guarded. (2) To cinch. (3) (Chess) Guard of one piece by another. (4) (Contract Bridge) A bid made in the belief that partner has passed with a strong hand.

Psychic bid (Bridge).One made without the cards to support it, for the purpose of mis-leading the opponents.
Pull down. Same as drag down.
Pung (Mah-Jongg).A meld of three of a kind. Punter. One who plays against the bank.
Pure canasta. Same as natural canasta.
Push. To pass unwanted cards to the player to one’s left.
Quart (Piquet).A sequence of four cards in the same suit.
Quatorze (Piquet).Four of a kind (tens or higher), counting 14.
Queen (Chess).The most powerful piece.
Queening (Chess).Replacement of a pawn that has reached the eighth rank by a queen.
Quick tricks. Same as honor tricks.
Quint (Piquet)A sequence of five cards in the same suit. (Mah-Jongg) A set of five like tiles (including wild flowers and jokers).
Quitted trick. One that has been turned face down.
Quong (Mah-Jongg).Same as kong.
Raffle. Three like numbers cast on three dice.
Rail (Craps).Raised edge of the table against which the dice must be cast.
Raise. (Poker) Put more chips in the pot than are necessary to ,meet the previous bet. (Bridge) Bid an increased number of tricks in a declaration previously bid by partners.
Rake-off. The percentage of the stakes taken by the house or club, usually by means of a kitty.

Ramsch (Skat).A nullo game which is played if all players pass.
Rangdoodles. Variant of roodles.
Rank. (1) The original position of a card in its suit, determining which card wins or bests another; the precedence of suits in bidding or showing. (2) (Chess) A horizontal row of squares.
Rearhind. Same as endhand.
Rebid (Bridge).A bid made by a player who had previously bid.
Rebiddable suit (Bridge).Any five-card suit headed by at least three high-card points: (Q J or K x x x x), or any suit of 6 or more cards.
Redeal. A new deal by the same dealer, usually after a misdeal.
Redouble (Bridge).A call which has the effect of further increasing the trick values and penalties in case the last preceding bid, doubled, becomes the contract.
Reduce (Rummy). Lower the count of one’s deadwood by discarding high cards; reducer, a low card.
Reentry. A card with which a hand can gain the lead after having lost it.
Refait (Trente et Quarante).A tie in totals of cards dealt to the two rows.
Refusal. (Ecarte) Rejection by dealer of a proposal. (All Fours) Acceptance by dealer of a beg (hence a refusal to let eldest hand score gift).
Regular drop move (Teeko).To place a pawn on anyone of the unoccupied circles of the game board at the start of the game. The drop-move phase of the game is completed when all eight] pawns are on the game board or a player has achieved a win with the dropping of his four pawns.

Reject (Skat).Nullo; a game to take as few points as possible.
Released card (Solitaire).One made available by the removal of covering cards.
Renege. Same as revoke.  Renounce. Playa card not of the suit led.
Repique (Piquet).The winning of 30 points in hand, without play, before the opponent scores a point; the bonus of 60 points therefore. Also, repic.
Replay double. A form of duplicate bridge between two pairs.
Requirement. The minimum holdings deemed systematically necessary for a bet, bid, or declaration as in Bridge.
Reraise. An amount of money put into the pot to equal the previous bet and raise, plus an additional bet.
Reserve (Solitaire).A part of the layout, cards available to be built elsewhere but not themselves to be built on until moved.
Response. (1) A bid made in reply to a bid by partner. (2) (Bridge) A card selected to be played to partner’s lead so as to give him information.
Restriction play (Checkers).Selection by chance of the opening to be played.
Revoke. Fail to follow suit when able; fail to playa card as required by a law of correct procedure.

Revolution (Skat).A variant of null overt in which the opponents may pool their cards and redistribute their hands as they see fit.
Riffle. A manner of shuffling.
Right bet (Craps).A bet that the shooter will pass; or, depending on usage, that he will make his point, or that the dice will win on a series of rolls beginning with the next.
Right bower (Euchre).The jack of trumps.
Right Pedro (Cinch).The five of trumps.
Rob a king (Mah-Jongg.),Claim a fourth tile just added to a pung by another player, to complete one’s hand.
Rob the Pack (Cinch).Select any desired cards from the stock (the privilege of the dealer).
Robbing. Exchanging a card in the hand for the card turned up for trump.
Roll (Craps).A cast of the dice; the total of the numbers on the uppermost faces.
Roller (Craps).One who rolls dice; shooter.
Roodles (Poker).Any special pot with increased ante or stakes.
Rook (Chess).A chess piece.

Rope (Rummy).A set in sequence.
Rotation. The progress of the turn to deal, bid, play, etc., which is from player to player to the left, clockwise. (Note: Clockwise rotation is standard for all American and English games. Many games originating in Italy, Spain, China, and elsewhere are traditionally counterclockwise.)
Rough (Poker).Relatively bad.
Round. Any division of the dealing, bidding or play, in which each hand participates once, e.g., the series of deals from one player’s turn to his next turn; the series of bids from one player’s turn to the next; a trick.
Round game. One in which there are no partnerships.
Round house (Pinochle).A meld comprising a king and a queen of each suit. Same as round trip.
Round-the-corner. Circular sequence of rank, the highest card being deemed adjacent to the lowest, as Q, K, A, 2, 3, a round-the-corner straight in Poker.
Row. A horizontal line of cards (Solitaire) or squares on a board, as in Checkers.
Royal flush (Poker).An ace-high straight flush. Royal marriage (Pinochle). A meld of the king and queen of trumps.
Royal sequence (Pinochle).Same as flush. Royalties. Payments collected by a player who holds any of certain high hands, in addition to whatever he wins in regular play.
Rubber. The winning of the first two out of three games by one side, or of a series of deals in Four-Suit Bridge.

Rubber Bridge (Bridge).A form of play in which rubbers are scored (as opposed to duplicate play).
Rubber points (Whist).Poi!1ts given for winning a rubber.
Rubicon (Piquet).Failure of the loser of a game to reach 100 points.
Ruff. Playa trump on a plain-suit lead.
Rule of eleven (Bridge).The fact that when a player leads the fourth-best of a suit the difference of its rank from 11 is the number of higher cards of the suit in the other three hands.
Rule of the fourth-best (Bridge) (1) The conventional practice of leading the fourth-best of a long suit. (2) The fact that such a lead shows that if the leader has more than four cards, the additional cards are lower in rank than the lead.
Rummy (Rummy).Get rid of the last card in the hand; lay down a hand completely formed in sets, also call attention to a play overlooked by an opponent.
Run. A sequence of three or more cards of the same suit, as in Cribbage, Rummy.
