CAN MAKE A LIVING PLAYING LOW TO MEDIUM-LIMIT POKER?

THE FINAL WORD

The Final Word

To paraphrase an old one-line, “There are only two people in the entire world of poker who are really willing to study the game me and you-and I’m not too sure about you.” My point here is: I want to become sure about you.

If you and I could walk in to a major cardroom and somehow stop the action for a moment and ask all those players, “How many of you are here to win money?”

Every hand in the place would go up.  We’d then have everyone resume playing as we strolled through the room observing.

It would soon become apparent that the vast majority did not come here to win money, or they wouldn’t be playing so badly.  Sure, they would like to win, but mostly they want to play.

And they seem to be abiding by the old poker adage, “Next to playing and winning, is playing and losing.  The important thing is playing.”

Most poker players do have the will to win.  What they don’t have is the will to prepare to win. Be my estimation, only 15-to-20 percent of all poker players ever get a book on how win at the game.

Notice that I used the word “get”, not “study”. Because I also estimate that 90 percent of those who do get a book of instruction won’t study it.

It’s as if they believe that the act of buying the book and having it in their possession will give them the winning poker knowledge they need, maybe through the process of osmosis.

They’ll read through the book once, quickly, promise themselves to really study it later (some undetermined, unscheduled “later ”), and then rush off to the poker game.

Most players just like the action.  For many, the social process is the important thing.  For a few-you and me-the idea is to leave the cardroom with more cash in our jeans than we came in with.

Personally, I don’t go to the poker room to play poker: I go to get the money. I’ve given you the information you need to get the money, consistently.

I have crammed twenty-five years of playing experience and study into this Course.  But it won’t be worth one blue farthing to you if it just lays around gathering dust.

So here’s our plan. You’ve read through the Course.  Now go back and read it again-just lightly, once over. At this point, the ideas will start to become familiar and will begin to be a part of your thinking and your playing.

Now you start studying. Read a Lesson.  Read it again.  Think about it.  Read it again.  Now get away from it for a day.  Then read it again.  Next lesson, repeat the process.

When you’ve done this with all of the Lesson, set the Course aside for a couple of weeks and do it all over again.  Now you’ve got it, and won’t lose it.

Then about every couple of months, take some time to lightly read through all the material again. If you’re beginning to think that this sounds like a lot of work-you’re right!

But nowhere in this Course have I promised you strawberries in your champagne, or an easy time in becoming a consistent winner.

And I’ll remind you of what Easy Ed said about practicing: “When you are not practicing, someone, somewhere, is practicing.

And when you meet him, he will beat you.” Many players, right this instant, are somewhere out there, studying poker. Some have taken my private Lessons.

Many are studying this very Course you now hold.  You had better get ready to meet them. Here’s my final “final word.”

It has also been my parting thought to my private students as I leave them at the end of the final session.

Many thousands of poker players now have, or soon will have, this same information you’ve learned from this Course.  Question: “If they know what you know, how are you going to beat them?”
Answer: Discipline!

Remember, it doesn’t matter how good you can play, what matters is how good you do play.  The player who holds his discipline and consciously works on eliminating mistakes, will be the consistent winner.

Solid poker gets the money at the low and medium limits. Forget about the will to win-instead, acquire the will to prepare to win.

Let me know how you do.
