Playing the High Hands

1. What must you be sure of when you play a high hand ?
Ans : That is the best high hand.

2. If you are the high hand and are playing heads up against a low hand who has caught two more low cards by fifth street, what should you do ?
Ans : You frequently should fold, unless you have improved to at least two pair.

3. What do you do if you have improved to two pair ?
Ans : Usually go to the river and pay it off.

4. When should you play the high hands strongly ?
Ans : When there are other high cards out.

5. What are you hoping to accomplish ?
Ans : To trap the second-and third-best high hands, and to drive out the low hands.

6. Suppose you are playing a high hand heads up against a probable low hand that has a wheel card showing on third street and then catches an ace on fourth street. What should you do ?
Ans : Usually fold immediately.

7. Can you ever call in this spot ?
Ans : Yes.  You sometimes can make a “crying call” and then must be prepared to fold on fifth street if your opponent catches anything that looks as though it could be trouble or if your hand falls slightly dead.

8. What if you’re opponent, who appears to be going low, pairs his door card on fourth street ?
Ans : You should fold.

9. How should you play when there could be two low hands out against you ?
Ans : You should try to avoid putting in a lot of money early with a high hand.

10. When is a good time to push a high hand ?
Ans : When you are against another high hand that is not as good as yours and a low draw.
